Tiramisu Is Escaping the Dessert Case
Coffee. Cream. Cocoa. Apparently that was only the beginning.
Tiramisu used to be a dessert. Now it is starting to look more like a flavor system.
The familiar combination of espresso, mascarpone-style cream, cocoa, and soft cake is showing up in croissants, drinks, ice cream, French toast, pastries, and increasingly questionable mashups.
And somehow, it keeps working.
Tiramisu has the advantage of being instantly recognizable without being locked into one texture or format. Coffee brings bitterness. Cream brings richness. Cocoa adds depth. Cake gives the whole thing somewhere soft to land.
Once you pull those pieces apart, you can rebuild tiramisu into almost anything.
Which, naturally, means people are trying.
