Loaded Throwback FroYo

The self-serve shop moved into your kitchen and lost adult supervision.

Classic tart homemade frozen yogurt meets a wildly overloaded toppings bar with fruit, brownies, cereal,…

The self-serve froyo shop never really died. It just moved into your kitchen and lost all adult supervision.

This starts with genuinely tangy homemade frozen yogurt, then hands control to a topping bar with more options than restraint. Pick four, pick ten, build responsibly—or don’t.

Tart Frozen Yogurt

  • 3 cups plain whole-milk Greek yogurt, cold
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup whole milk, cold
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

Build-Your-Own Toppings Bar

Choose any 4 to 6—or deploy the entire counter.

  • 1 cup sliced fresh strawberries
  • 3/4 cup brownie chunks
  • 1/2 cup rainbow cereal
  • 1/2 cup gummy candy
  • 1/2 cup popping boba, drained
  • 1/2 cup crushed chocolate sandwich cookies
  • 1/3 cup mini chocolate chips
  • 1/3 cup graham cracker crumbs
  • 1/2 cup mini marshmallows
  • 1/3 cup chocolate sauce
  • 1/3 cup caramel sauce
  • 4 wafer cookies

Make the FroYo

  1. Whisk the cold Greek yogurt, sugar, milk, lemon juice, vanilla, and salt until completely smooth and the sugar has dissolved, 2 to 3 minutes.
  2. Taste the base. It should be a little sweeter and tangier than the finished froyo because freezing mutes both. Add another teaspoon of lemon juice only if you want more tart-shop bite.
  3. Ice cream maker method: Churn according to the manufacturer’s directions until thick and softly swirled, 20 to 25 minutes. Transfer to a freezer-safe container and freeze about 2 hours, until scoopable.
  4. No-machine method: Pour into a shallow metal pan and freeze for 45 minutes. Scrape and whisk vigorously, then repeat every 30 minutes four more times. Freeze 60 to 90 minutes longer, until scoopable.
  5. While the froyo firms up, set out your chosen toppings in small bowls. Keep sauces pourable and drain the popping boba well.
  6. Let firm froyo stand at room temperature for 5 to 10 minutes. Divide among 4 cups, load it up with toppings, and serve immediately.

Editor Note

Notes: Homemade froyo freezes firmer than shop soft-serve. Let it stand at room temperature for 5 to 10 minutes before scooping. If your ice cream maker uses a freezer bowl, freeze it according to the manufacturer's directions before starting.

Make it yours: Regular plain whole-milk yogurt works if you strain it until thick. For honey-sweetened froyo, replace the sugar with 1/2 cup mild honey and reduce the milk to 1/2 cup. Thick cultured coconut yogurt also works, but it will freeze firmer. The topping list is a menu, not a legal obligation: choose 4 to 6 favorites or embrace the full chaos.
